Liverpool Book Art

We are passionate about the whole range of book art, from unique hand-made books to book sculptures. Being collectors of artists’ books and having enjoyed attending fairs around the U.K. over a number of years, we decided we wanted to support artists by organising events and activities in our home city of Liverpool.

‘ART, SCIENCE and CREATIVITY’ EXHIBITION

Call for Submissions

Liverpool Book Art is curating another major exhibition in 2024. We have decided to take a different approach this year, as set out below, rather than celebrating a significant anniversary (unless you count the fact that our first exhibition took place 10 years ago!). We are now inviting submissions from artists who wish to participate.

Our starting point is a quote from Albert Einstein:

“Where the world ceases to be a stage for personal hopes, aspirations and dreams, and we stand before it as free creatures, full of admirations, questions and contemplation, we enter the realm of art and science. If we describe what we see and experience in the language of logic, we do science; if we convey connections through forms that are inaccessible to the rational mind, but intuitively recognisable as making sense, we do art.”

Creativity is central to exploration in both art and science. And as we wonder, and attempt to understand our worlds and the universe – and hence ourselves and humanity – categories can,and perhaps should, become blurred. As the great science-fiction writer Arthur C Clarke said: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”.

Artists are invited to bring their own creativity and imaginations to consider this broad theme. We are keen to receive proposals which involve the creation of new book art. In addition, in recognition of LBA’s 10 years of exhibiting, we are also happy to receive submissions of already created artist’s books, including relevant works shown by LBA in previous years.

Our long-standing collaboration with Liverpool Central Library continues in 2024. The exhibition will open there on 3rd September in the magnificent Hornby room, and run until the end of October.

Previous LBA exhibitions have been a great success, attracting international submissions of the highest quality, with works from Japan, Australia, Russia, USA, and across Europe and the UK. We are open to, and encourage, submissions from across the diverse range of book art – multiples and unique works; narratives and non-narratives; sculptural works and altered books…Submissions will be assessed, and selection made, by the LBA team.

The formal application process for the Art, Science and Creativity exhibition is now open on https://www.curatorspace.com/ which includes full details of how to apply, selection dates and timetable for delivery. The Call closes on 27th May 2024. This is the deadline for proposals, not completed works!

Online Exhibition

Magellan’s Voyage of Discovery

Back in 2019, Liverpool Book Art was excited to announce its fourth major exhibition of Book Art. We had selected a significant anniversary in world history as the theme for our next exhibition. 2020 marked 500 years since Ferdinand Magellan discovered the passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, at the southern tip of South America, now known as the Strait of Magellan. The expedition set sail from Spain in September 1519, and the one surviving ship returned to Spain in September 1522.

It has proved impossible to secure satisfactory venues for a physical exhibition within the (3-year!) anniversary of the voyage. So this online exhibition is a substitute for a physical exhibition.

Artists responded to the exhibition theme with enthusiasm, creativity and imagination. The range of ideas and perspectives has been terrific, as you will see. Before and during our extended disruption, several artists completed their works; others developed concepts, ideas and sketches. These all form part of this exhibition, together with artists’ statements; descriptions of materials and processes; editions and whether works are for sale.
